A lot of the works I did in the 70’s and 80’s I have no record of since the people who purchased them have moved to unknown locations. I also only started keeping personal track of the pieces with the onset of the digital camera. When I started painting, I was taught that Painting was done with paint, not with colored pencil, pastels, chalk or crayon. Chalk and pastels, and charcoal with ink and graphite. were part of Drawing on paper of course. At least this was the way it was when I began my study of Art. Things change. Painting was Oil, Acrylic, watercolor, or Gouache. Since I started with Acrylic, I have pretty much stuck with them. As an undergraduate I was strongly encouraged to paint with Acrylic paints. And in Graduate, oil paints were pooh-poohed because they were toxic. God forbid we don’t do a green painting. In fact when I was doing silkscreen, I used oil based inks, today everything is water based. Even wood cuts are done with acrylic inks, and mono-prints are also a water based printing method. So the works I will exhibit here are Acrylic unless otherwise specified. I really am too old to change, now. So I paint with acrylics and watercolor. When I was training for commercial Art I was taught to use watercolor and Gouache. Gouache was use for large areas of flat dry even hued opaque paint. Today theses are acrylic and water based. A true water colorist only uses watercolors no watered down acrylics or gouache them make areas more opaque. I frequently try to embody my paintings with the feeling that I derive from viewing the physical elements that make up each piece. |
